Northwestern University is located along the shores of Lake Michigan just 12 miles north of downtown Chicago in Evanston, Illinois. The O ce of International Program Development (IPD) at Northwestern welcomes over 50 exchange students from over a dozen university partners each year, who study at Northwestern during the Fall, Winter, and/or Spring Quarters. Students may enroll directly in courses across a wide variety of disciplines and can take part in hundreds of student clubs, events, and activities.
ACADEMICS
Undergraduate students at Northwestern typically take three or four courses per quarter in a variety of subjects. Most courses at Northwestern are worth 1 unit of credit and meet for three hours per week over the 10-week quarter. Some classes have additional laboratory or discussion sections. International exchange students must maintain full-time enrollment, which is de ned as three or more credits per quarter. It is not recommended that exchange students take ve classes, what is considered at Northwestern to be an overload, given various demands and priorities on and o campus. For the purpose of transferring credit, 1 unit of Northwestern credit should be considered the equivalent of 2.66 U.S. semester hours.
