Exchange students are not permitted to take core courses. Also, students should note prerequisite requirements for all classes. If students register for courses that have prerequisites, they may be requested to provide relevant documentation of courses taken at the home institution. If such proof cannot be provided, they may be removed from the course.

Once nominated by their home school, incoming students will use the University’s online International Programs portal, M-Compass, to complete an application and provide the necessary documentation. https://mcompass.umich.edu/

The University of Michigan requires students to have demonstrated proficiency in English. Minimum requirements as set by the University are:

Foreign language courses are offered at the undergraduate level. Please contact your home school’s academic services office to ensure that taking a language course will fit into your academic plan.

Exchange students should have completed basic core courses before coming on exchange and should note prerequisite requirements for individual courses. A home school transcript may be required to prove completion of prerequisites during orientation.

Graduate students are required to register for a minimum of 9 credit hours to be considered a full-time student and fulfill F-1 visa requirements. Most MBA students take 9-15 credit hours per semester, and the maximum number of credits allowed is 18 per semester.

Undergraduate students are required to register for a minimum of 12 credit hours to be considered a full-time student and fulfill F-1 visa requirements. Most BBA students take 12-15 credit hours per semester, and the maximum allowed is 18 per semester.
