German immigration law requires a Student Visa (Visum für Studienzwecke) to take on any kind of studies. Exact regulations vary depending on the country issuing the passport. EU-Citizens Those holding a passport of the European Union are a Union Citizen (Unionsbürger) and therefore do not require a Student Visa for their studies in Germany.
Preferred Countries
Those holding a passport of a preferred country can enter Germany on a Tourist Visa but still have to apply for a Student Visa in Germany after arrival. Preferred countries are: Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and the United States of America. All other Countries
Those holding a passport of any other country than the above mentioned have to apply for Student Visa at the German Embassy in their home country. Please always check specific visa regulations with the German Embassy in your home country! We also advise you to read the “Pre-Arrival Guide” and the “Munich Survival Guide”; Can be accessed through our download website. (see link below).
Housing
Accepted incoming students must try to arrange their own accommodation prior to their arrival. If permanent accommodation cannot be obtained from abroad, they must arrange temporary housing in a youth hostel or inexpensive hotel for the first one or two weeks of their stay. Check the Housing Guide on the download link below.
*Example 1: Usually a room in a shared apartment. (Can be found via www.wg-gesucht.de)
Cost of Living
We estimate that living costs will be between 1250 and 1550 Euro per month. The budget will mostly depend on how you manage your free time (e.g. travelling, eating out, concerts, using sports facilities, museum visits, clubs). Below is an example of an exchange student’s monthly budget:
Category Rent (Does not include electricity, heating, Wifi) Groceries/Food Public transportation Phone/Internet Miscellaneous (incl. Books, Health Insurance)** Total
Example 1* €600 €400 €40
€50 €160 €1250
Example 2* €900 €400 €40
€50 €160 €1550
Example 2: a typical rent for a studio (1 room apartment) in Munich. **Books are not as expensive as they are in some other countries. You may need to budget about €80 per semester for books and this amount is included in the miscellaneous (incl. books) monthly expenses.
