Registration
New students are required to enrol at the Registrar’s Office and bring the documents listed in the Letter of Acceptance with them. The registration materials are available at the International Office. Exchange and visiting students of the University are encouraged to pay the voluntary membership fee of the Student Union of University of Tampere (58 € for one semester, 116 € for the whole academic year). On payment of this fee, students receive an official student card. As members of the Student Union, exchange and visiting stu- dents are entitled to use the services of the Student Union as well as the student health care services. For international exchange and visiting students pursuing a PhD degree at their home universities, the voluntary membership fee is 24,50 € for one semester and 49 € for the whole academic year. PhD students are not entitled to travel discounts or to the student health care services.
The four-period system does not apply to medical students who follow a two- semester system.
Student Tutoring
At the University of Tampere, a student tutor is assigned to every international exchange and visiting stu- dent. The tutor is a fellow student who can help new exchange and visiting students with practicalities, such as finding their way to their accommodation and helping them plan their study schedule. A student tutor usually meets the arriving student at the railway station or bus station in the Centre of Tampere if she/he has been informed about the arrival a few days in advance. The contact information of the student tutor will be sent to the incoming exchange and visiting students after the application and acceptance process.
Study Guides in English
Study-related information in English is published at www.uta.fi/studies/studying. The ECTS Study Guide included in the ECTS Survival Guide gives a general review of the study system at
the University of Tampere: www.uta.fi/admissions/admitted-students
The ECTS Curricula Guide contains the course descriptions of study modules which can be completed in English or in another foreign language, see www.uta.fi/studies/studying/curriculaguides.html. Please note that in addition to course units offered as contact teaching (lectures, seminars etc.), the Curricula Guide includes course units which students can complete independently (e.g. book exams).
The detailed teaching schedules for the academic year 2017-2018 will be published in mid-May, see www.uta.fi/studies/studying/schedules.html.
Further information for exchange and visiting students on how to plan their studies at UTA is available at www.uta.fi/studies/exchangesstudents.
Credits and Grading
Finnish credits are ECTS compatible, i.e. one Finnish credit (opintopiste) corresponds to one ECTS credit. Grading of Exams
A 5-tier grading scale (5-1) is used at the University of Tampere. It is compatible with the ECTS grading scale (A-E). Furthermore, pass/fail (HYV/HYL) is used in course evaluation as such without grading to indi- cate that the student has fulfilled / not fulfilled the requirements set in the curriculum for the course.
Transcript of Academic Records
The transcripts of the exchange / visiting students will be sent to their home addresses in their home coun- tries after the exchange period. The request needs to be made at the Registrar’s Office of the University of Tampere before departure.
Student Housing
Finding suitable housing can be difficult especially in the autumn, so students need to be prompt in applying for accommodation. We have placed information on different options on the University website at www.uta.fi/admissions/pre-arrival-information
